FAQs–FTS TRANSPORTATION

My student goes by a different name. Can this name be on their bus pass?

Students must be registered at the school and with Transportation with the same name.

I have more than one student that needs a bus pass.  Do I have to fill out the application information more than once?

A separate application is required for each student that needs a bus pass. This is facilitated when applying online by selecting those of your students who require a bus pass.

I tried to select all of my children for bus pass application but not all of them have transportation available to their school.

Please de-select any student whose school does not have transportation.

My students qualified for a low income bus pass last year.  How do I apply for the low income pass on line?

Low income passes require supporting documentation for processing.  Please submit a paper application, available for download on our PUSD Transportation page at   www.powayusd.com/trans.

My students qualify for transportation because of Foster Care Status.  How do I apply for their bus passes online?

Foster Care passes require additional documentation for processing.  Please submit a paper application, available for download on our PUSD Transportation page at  www.powayusd.com/trans.

My students need Special Education transportation. Do I apply for a bus pass?

If you are applying for transportation due to Special Education, it must be indicated in your student’s Individual Education Program (IEP). RSP and DIS students do not qualify for free transportation. Special Education transportation is arranged through your Program Specialist.

How do I know what bus stop will be assigned?

Your student will be assigned to the safest stop for your residence.  Links for general information for bus stops by address and bus stop locations by school are available on the PUSD Transportation page at www.powayusd.com/trans.

I want my student to use a particular bus stop.

Your student will be assigned to the safest stop for your residence.  Requests for an alternate or additional stop can be made by checking the box following “ If you are requesting an alternate or dual stops for your student click here ”.  The Parents Acceptance of Responsibility Form must be filed with a request for an alternate or additional stop.

My student has two different home addresses.  Do I still have to request double or alternate stops?

Yes. Your student will be assigned to the safest stop for the primary residence on file.  If your student requires transportation to or from a different address due to an additional family or child care address, you must request an additional or alternate stop.

Who is responsible for the students while they are waiting for the school bus?

PUSD does not supervise bus stops, and is not responsible for the control and conduct of students at the bus stops. Parents are encouraged to supervise their children until they are safely aboard the school bus.

What do I do if my student loses their bus pass?

Lost or stolen passes will be replaced upon payment of a $20.00 service charge.  The service charge is non-refundable as the original pass will be deactivated and no longer valid for use.

Why am I being charged a fee to replace my student's bus pass?  It is not lost, but the driver took it because it wasn't working.

Bus passes are considered the property of the district, rented to the bearers, who are charged with custodial responsibility and are expected to safeguard them accordingly.  Passes rendered illegible or inactive due to abuse or mutilation must be replaced upon the payment of the $20.00 non-refundable fee.

Are bus passes refundable?

Prorated refunds will be made based on the date the current valid bus pass is received in the Transportation Department, minus a $20.00 service fee.  All refunds are subject to provisions of Administrative Procedure 6.56.1.

Do I have to apply and pay online to get a bus pass for my student?

Online application and payment for bus passes is designed for greater convenience and accuracy.  Paper applications are available for download and printing at www.powayusd.com/trans and may be submitted as indicated on the application.

How do I get a bus pass for my student?

Application for bus passes are accepted beginning July 1 for the following school year.  Apply and pay online at www.powayusd.com/trans. Paper applications are also available for download and printing at www.powayusd.com/trans and may be submitted as indicated on the application.

Will the pass be sent to my home or to the school?

If your paid application is received on or before the first Friday in August, the bus pass will be mailed to your home.  All passes for which applications are received after this date will be sent to the school to be picked up in the Administration Office.

Can my student ride the bus the first day of school if they haven’t received their bus pass?

Yes. Students may ride to school on the first day using our Non-Pass Rider policy. The student should check in the school Administration Office for their bus pass to avoid overuse of this policy.

What if I applied after the cutoff date and my student’s bus pass is not ready for pick up at the school office?

Your student will be issued a temporary bus pass upon confirmation of receipt of application and payment.  Temporary bus passes are issued online, at Transportation and the schools.

Why should I apply and pay online?

Online application and payment for bus passes is intended for convenience and designed for greater accuracy.  During high volume periods, there may be parking problems and extended waiting periods at PUSD Transportation.  We encourage you to complete your application and pay online.

My student has an intra- or inter-district transfer. Can he/she ride the bus?

Students with an inter- or intra-district transfer relinquish all rights for transportation.  In an effort to assist parents with their student transportation needs, the Transportation Department will allow students who do not live within the transportable boundary for their school to access existing school bus stops for the school of attendance if their parents give written assurance that their children will be safely delivered and picked up by their parents from these existing school bus stops.  Because there may be hazardous streets between the child’s home and the nearest active school bus stop, it must be understood by parents choosing to access such a school bus stop that they assume the full responsibility of providing a safe means of transportation to and from the assigned school bus stop.  The Poway Unified School District transportation fee structure is applicable.  In the event that a District school bus reaches maximum capacity, students whose transportation needs cannot be accommodated will be reimbursed, applying the standard District reimbursement of fees schedule, and after appropriate notice to parent/guardian is provided.

My student only needs a ride one way. Are one way passes available?

All PUSD bus passes are round trip.  A student may ride one way with a bus pass, or by paying the single ride fare of $4.00. If using cash to pay the bus driver students must have the exact amount as drivers do not carry change.  Single–ride tickets may be purchased at the Transportation Office for $4.00 per ticket.  Single-ride tickets do not expire and are not refundable.

Do I apply here or pay for Special Education transportation?

Special Education students whose Individual Education Program (IEP) include transportation services are provided transportation free of charge.  Note:  Students enrolled in RSP and DIS are not eligible for Special Education transportation.

Are free passes available for regular education transportation?

Foster children and children of families with income at or below the eligibility guideline shall be eligible, upon approval, for free transportation if such students would otherwise be eligible for transportation services.

What does having a bus pass mean for my student’s transportation?

Possession of a current pass entitles a student to ride to and from the designated school and bus stop only on the assigned bus for grades TK-8.  Passes will not be recognized for transportation on any other bus than the bus for which the pass was issued.  Reassignment to a different bus or a different stop, due to the change of address or personal preference, may be requested by submitting a written request, together with a non-refundable $20.00 fee, to the Director of Transportation; however, all decisions regarding assignments to buses and stops are at the sole discretion of the District.  Middle and high school students who possess a current pass, correct fare or single-ride ticket will also be eligible to ride the after-school activity bus at each location by presenting their current pass, fare or single-ride ticket; however, not every bus stop is serviced by the activity buses.  High school students may ride any regular bus that services their school.

Is having a bus pass better than paying the single-ride fare of $4.00?

Students holding passes will be given priority on assigned buses.  Transportation of other students will be on a space available basis only, including students who purchase single-ride tickets. The round-trip cost of transportation with a bus pass is $3.15 per day with a YEAR pass, and $3.50 per day with a Semester pass.  If your student will ride the school bus one way 4 or more times per week, it is cost-effective to purchase a round trip bus pass.

Can my student get on or off the bus at a stop different from the stop on his or her pass?

Possession of a current pass entitles a student to ride to and from the designated school and bus stop only on the assigned bus for grades TK-8.  Passes will not be recognized for transportation on any other bus than the bus for which the pass was issued.  Reassignment to a different bus or a different stop, due to the change of address or personal preference, may be requested by submitting a written request, together with a non-refundable $20.00 fee, to the Director of Transportation; however, all decisions regarding assignments to buses and stops are at the sole discretion of the District.  High school students may ride any regular bus that services their school.

What if my student needs to ride a different bus for just one day?

For TK-8 students riding an unassigned bus, boarding or leaving a bus at an unassigned stop may only be done by presenting the driver with dated written permission from the parent and endorsed by a school official.  High school students may ride any regular bus that services their school.

Does the bus pass allow my student to ride the activity bus also?

Middle and high school students who possess a current pass, correct fare or single-ride ticket will also be eligible to ride the after-school activity bus at each location by presenting their current pass, fare or single-ride ticket; however, not every bus stop is serviced by the activity buses.

Does my student’s pass belong to the student or parent?

Bus passes are considered the property of the District, rented to the bearers, who are charged with custodial responsibility and are expected to safeguard them accordingly.  The District assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen passes or tickets. Unreadable or mutilated passes must be replaced upon the payment of a non-refundable $20.00 service charge.  Lost or stolen passes will be replaced upon the payment of a non-refundable $20.00 service charge, and after prior pass purchase has been verified and deactivation of the original pass.  Replacement can be made at the school or at the Transportation Department.  For passes purchased online, replacement passes are available online.

What if my student loses his/her bus pass?

Lost or stolen passes will be replaced upon the payment of a non-refundable $20.00 service charge, and after prior pass purchase has been verified and deactivation of the original pass.  Replacement can be made at the school or at the Transportation Department.  For passes purchased online, replacement passes are available online.

What if my student’s pass gets mutilated or is no longer readable?

Unreadable or mutilated passes must be replaced upon the payment of a non-refundable $20.00 service charge.  The original pass must be returned through the school or to the Transportation Department for proper disposal.

Can my student ride a different bus than the route on the bus pass?

Ride only the bus to which you have been assigned.  For TK-8 students, riding an unassigned bus, boarding or leaving a bus at an unassigned  stop may only be done by presenting the driver with dated written permission from the parent and endorsed by a school official.  High school students may ride any regular bus that services their school.

What time should my student be at the bus stop to ride to school?

Students must be at the bus stop no more than five minutes before departure time.

Can my student get off the bus before it leaves the school?

Once a student has boarded the school bus at a school site, he or she may not leave the bus unless escorted by a school official.

Can the driver stop to allow a student to board the bus after the bus has pulled away from the curb?

For the safety of all students and to avoid children chasing after a moving bus, once a school bus has departed from the curb, at either the school site or bus stop, the driver is not permitted to stop the bus to board late students.

What if the school bus does not show up?

If you are reasonably sure that the delay is not due to weather conditions, please allow at least 15 minutes before leaving the bus stop.  School buses have to endure the same rush hour traffic conditions that plague commuters.  A traffic snarl, traffic accident, minimum days or a longer than scheduled loading at a previous school bus stop can easily throw your bus 10-15 minutes off schedule.

- On extremely foggy or rainy days the buses will run late.

- If at the end of 15 minutes, if your bus still has not arrived, you may wish to call the Transportation Department at (858) 679-2535.  Please be patient and don’t worry—the school will be notified of the late arrival.

Can Kindergarten students ride the school bus?

Yes. School bus transportation is available to students TK-12 who reside in a transportable area for their school. Kindergarten mid-day, early out transportation service is NOT provided during school start-up Transition days.

Do I need to be at the bus stop to meet my Kindergarten student?

No, your Kindergarten student will be released upon arrival at the bus stop. If you desire that your Kindergarten student not be released at the bus stop unless an adult is there to receive them, a letter   MUST be on file in the Transportation Department so stating.  If, once a letter is on file, your child is not met the driver will return your child to school.

Do the bus drivers have communication with the schools or Transportation Department?

For student safety and route control each bus is equipped with a two-way radio.  The Transportation Department is in constant communication with each bus on its scheduled runs. If there is a problem, such as a late bus or perhaps a student riding the wrong bus, the Transportation Department will be able to contact the bus and make the necessary corrections.

My student left something on the bus. Can it be retrieved?

If a driver finds a lost item on a bus, they will attempt to return the item to the student the next school day, as we do not have a Lost & Found.  Wallets, cell phones, musical instruments and purses will be turned in to the Transportation Office.

Do I need a bus pass if my student will only ride the bus for field trips or athletics?

No, bus passes are not required for transportation for field trips or athletic events.

Do I have to apply and pay online for a bus pass?

The online application and payment system is designed for greater accuracy and convenience.  You can still submit a paper application.  Paper applications may be downloaded for printing at www.powayusd.com/trans.  You may also pick up an application packet at the schools or PUSD Transportation located at 13626 Twin Peaks Road, Poway.
